During my Latina Adventures in Croatia, I can’t begin to count how many times I was left speechless. In just 7 days, I did the most hopping around of my #GirltakesMundo tour, visiting Split, Krka, Hvar, Palmižana, and Dubrovnik. I have so much to say about Croatia, but words fail me. So, in honor of being left speechless, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves and share the sights that left this loud mouth awed.

A fellow traveler reached out for tips on Croatia, and I was happy to share my insights from the top three cities I visited. In the spirit of my Latina Adventures in Croatia, I’m sharing those tips in this post. Enjoy!

Hvar Island: A Paradise for Beach Lovers

I visited Hvar after exploring Split and before heading to Dubrovnik, and it was probably my favorite of all three cities. I found it to be a perfect blend of daytime tranquillity and lively nightlife, making it an ideal destination for any traveler. See the activities I recommend you spend your days doing in between beach bumming below.

  • Discover the stunning beaches of Hvar by exploring various options online to find the one that suits your preferences best. Opt for a half-day Pakleni island sail or make it a full day trip on this Blue Cave & 5 islands tour.
  • Enjoy a breathtaking walk up to the Spanish fortress – Tvrdava Fortica before sunset for stunning views. It’s also easier to make the ascent in the afternoon when the sun isn’t as intense.
  • Traveling from Split to Hvar is convenient, with options for fast boats or slow ferries, taking about an hour to an hour and a half. Be sure to book your spot in advance, especially if you’re continuing to Dubrovnik, as tickets can sell out quickly. Getting stuck in Hvar isn’t the worst thing, though—it’s a beautiful place to spend an extra day as I did!
  • Experience the vibrant nightlife in Hvar, including a tipsy BBQ at Casa del Vino and if you are ready for the after-party, a nearby island hosts this after party from 2 AM when the main city’s nightlife winds down. Your ticket includes the boat ride to and from the island.
  • Rent a scooter to explore the island at your own pace. I discovered a quiet, less touristy beach about 20 to 25 minutes away from the fortress along the main road, offering a peaceful retreat.
  • Go beyond the beaches and explore the landscape by taking in the intoxicating spell of lavender fields first hand. This Hvar lavendar half-day tour includes round trip transportation and local guide.

Must-see places in Split

  • Krka Waterfall – An incredible day trip just a 1.5-hour drive from Split. We split the cost of a private ride, giving us the flexibility to spend as much time as we wanted there. Don’t forget your swimsuit, as swimming in the waterfalls is a must-do experience.

This 1-day Krka Waterfall tour includes a boat cruise and walking guide combo.
  • Split Old Town – This area is a must-visit, with its charming streets and vibrant market. Spend some time wandering and soaking in the local atmosphere.

Short on time in Split this 90-min Split walking tour covers all the highlights of the city.
  • Grgur Ninski Statue – Be sure to visit the statue of Grgur Ninski and rub his big toe while making a wish. It’s believed that your wish will come true!
  • Marjan Hill – Take a walk up Marjan Hill for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It’s a bit of a climb, but the view from the top is well worth the effort.

Enhance your walk up Marjan Hill by adding a self-guided audio tour to your playlist.
  • Bačvice Beach – Located conveniently close to the main part of Split, Bačvice Beach is perfect for sunbathing and lounging. While it might not be Croatia’s most stunning beach, it’s ideal for a relaxing day in the sun.

Dubrovnik in a Few Days

I spent just one day and a half in Dubrovnik. By that time, I was feeling a bit exhausted from all the traveling during the first portion of my Latina sabbatical, which may have influenced my experience of this beautiful city. Here are a few tips that can help you take advantage of your time here and what to visit.

  • Dubrovnik tends to be pricier than other Croatian cities due to its popularity. However, visiting outside of peak season or towards the end of it can help you manage your budget more effectively.
  • Exploring Dubrovnik’s Old Town is essential. Don’t miss walking along the city walls and taking the Dubrovnik cable car to enjoy breathtaking hilltop views.
  • Consider visiting the nearby islands and Cava Beach, which are renowned for their beauty. While I didn’t have the chance to visit them myself, many Dubrovnik blue & green cave excursions are available and offer easy stress free return trips to these stunning locations.
