Taiwan felt surprisingly familiar to me, given my time in Japan and Hong Kong. From what I learned and know, it’s no surprise that Japan and China have played a big role in Taiwan’s history and culture. I came here to ring in the New Year, initially thinking it might just be another destination to check off during my five-week Asia trip. But I was so wrong. Whether you’re releasing sky lanterns in Shifen or savoring tea along Jiufen’s coast, this Latina Solo Guide to Taiwan draws from my five-day solo adventure to help you plan your own journey to this incredible destination.
For me, this solo adventure in Taiwan reminded me why solo travel can be so unforgettable. From trying new foods, to meeting some of the friendliest people I’ve encountered. This vibrant city wholeheartedly welcomes solo adventurers, and as a female traveler, felt completely safe. Even when walking back to my accommodation late at night after the New Year celebrations near Taipei 101.

Before You Arrive In Taiwan

Flight | Stay | Do | Drive |
| Trip.com | Agoda | GetYourGuide | Rentalcars.com |
Complete The Entry Process: Fill out the NIA Speedy Immigration e-Gate Application before your arrival to streamline entry and check if you require a VISA. For US & UK citizens you don’t require a VISA as of 2025.
Order Your EasyCard: Purchase your EasyCard in advance using Klook. The EasyCard is a must-have for public transportation in Taiwan. It’s also useful for shopping in shops such as Family Mart and 7-11.
My Observations Of Taiwan

| Cultural Blend | If Japan and China had a baby, you’d get Taiwan. And given the history of Taiwan, it’s no surprise this feels like this. The country’s cleanliness habits mimic Japan, so plan to carry your rubbish with you until you find a bin but it’s completely OK to eat while walking. |
| Public Transportation | Trains may run slightly ahead or behind schedule with many arriving before so plan to always be at the stop or platform ahead of departure to play this safely. Buses often feature modern amenities like USB charging ports, which was a lifesaver during my long day trips. Use Google Maps for bus and train schedules. |
| Convenience Stores | Did you know Taiwan has over 14,000 convenience stores? That means you’ll come across plenty during your travels! Don’t miss out on trying local snacks like Family Mart’s jalapeño cheese chicken roll and the “Imei” cream puffs, which were my personal favorite! |
| Water Safety | Tap water is not drinkable, but fountain water stations do provide purified and safe water to drink. |
| Language Help | Mandarin is used in Taiwan and Taiwanese are super friendly. Even if they don’t know the language you speak, using Google Translate to ask people for help will go a long way as they use Google Translate too. |
| Still Use Cash | In Taiwan, cash is still the preferred payment method in many of the smaller restaurants, shops and especially in the night markets. |
Bringing In The New Year In Taipei

One of Taiwan’s biggest highlights is ringing in the New Year in its capital city. I was very fortunate to be able to coincide my visit with this big event and experience bringing in the New Year with another solo traveler turned friend as we both shared New Year traditions from our country.
Popular Spots To Watch Fireworks
Taipei City Hall: Where you will find younger attendees as this is where the dance and music performances occur.
National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall: This was my pick. The atmosphere was lively but not overcrowded and perfect for enjoying a picnic while waiting for the countdown. A big shout out to my Filipino friend, Aldrin, who ventured out to secure us a spot many hours before the clock struck midnight.
Taipei 101: Watch the iconic fireworks display at this world-famous landmark.
Elephant Mountain: Offers an elevated view of the city and Taipei 101.
Ce La Vi: Ideal for party-goers seeking a chic club vibe.
