This Father-Daughter Rome Retreat was created after a wonderful few days exploring Rome with my father during his first visit to Europe.
I may be a bit biased, but as a seasoned travel blogger with a deep appreciation for Italy, it was a privilege to guide my father through the wonders of Rome, a city I’ve visited before. Given my dad’s VIP status, I spared no effort in ensuring his experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Despite my familiarity with the city, I enlisted the expertise of local Italians to curate the finest dining experiences, which I’m excited to share below.
The highlights of our journey were truly unforgettable. We had the privilege of attending a mass led by the Pope himself at the Vatican, exploring the city at our leisure aboard a hop-on-hop-off bus and creating unforgettable memories with my father throughout the city.
Rome is:
- Family Friendly
- Couples approved
- Solo travel approved
- A great place for a return visit
- Latino friendly – It was great seeing my dad making friends with other Latinos who were visiting and exchanging their stories in Espanol
- A good balance of sights and slowing down to enjoy the simple things like wine

Where To Stay In Rome

Simon’s Suite – The Heart of Rome
What a find!!! Aside from a fantastic space to stay in while visiting Rome, it is in a convenient location to Termini station (located in the nicer area near the station) making it easy to access various icons of the city. Simon is proactive and happily willing to guide you to the best areas to visit, eat at, etc. He was kind enough to let us store our luggage in the apartment after we checked out as we had a late train.
For even more accommodation options that fit your trip needs, use Agoda and check out a few suggestions below.
| Hotel Duca D’Alba | 4-star hotel | Another good recommendation option in Rome to rest in. |
| Residenza Maritti | 4-star serviced accommodation | Bang on near the Colosseum and it has a rooftop bar where you can take aperitivo and enjoy a beaitiful panorama of Rome. |
Rome Must See

The obvious things to see in Rome are:
- Colosseum
- St. Peter’s Basilica – There are a variety of ticket options to enter but do note it’s free if you just want to see the basilica or listen to daily mass. (Check site for update schedule) Mind you, arrive early to not wait too long in line to enter for free.
- Sistine Chapel
- Vatican City – check the Vatican’s official website as you may get lucky and witness a mass offered by the Pope the way my dad and I did.
- Trevi Fountain
- Spanish Steps – Pompi Tiramisù is very close by and known for their delicious tiramisu. Worth grabbing as the perfect snack to enjoy while at the Spanish Steps.
- Piazza Navona
- Pantheon
- Roman Forum
- Castel Sant’angelo
- Victor Emmanuel Monument
- Trastevere – Beautiful little cobblestone neighborhood with wine bars, bistros and shops. Perfect for a little stroll between sights.
Unique Rome Experiences

For activities in Rome, I strongly suggest purchasing tickets beforehand. This will spare you the hassle of queuing to buy tickets, only to find yourself waiting again in another line to enter, and so on.
| Colosseum VIP Access with Arena and Ancient Rome Tour This Colosseum and ancient Rome tour, complete with special access from the arena floor. Say goodbye to waiting in line and save this time for more Rome sites. This tour offers an exclusive glimpse into history with its guide. Plus, you can dive deeper into ancient Rome with a visit to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill if you upgrade the tour option. |
| Rome Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour Discover the ease of exploring Rome with this hop-on-hop-off bus tour—I usually do a full loop and listen to the audio before hopping off. It’s perfect for families, kids, or older adults, as it saves us all those extra steps. It’s a fun and a stress-free way to navigate the city, stopping at all the must-see sights without the confusion of the local bus system. |
| Explore a deeper side of Rome with hands-on cooking classes. Learn to make authentic Italian dishes like pizza, pasta, or tiramisu, and connect with local families along the way. These classes were a highlight of my trip, offering not just culinary skills but also genuine cultural experiences as I left feeling more appreciative of Italian dishes and made friends with the local family who I later reunited with in Gran Canaria. Must Try Eats In Rome

Where To Eat In Rome
Osteria da Fortunata – Rinascimento
Must do Italian restaurant. Pasta is made fresh in front of you and this eatery offers an authentic ambience. Order their Pico cacio e Pepe – simple traditional pasta dish or Pasta allá matriciana – for meat eaters.
For dessert, I’d suggest walking to “La Romana” for gelato which is a 2 min walk from this restaurant.
This little nook offers exceptional food and even better customer service. My father and I were told about this gem by an Italian so we naturally had to visit. While we couldn’t make reservations, we didn’t mind waiting and the hostess kindly gave my father a seat to sit in while we waited as she felt bad for him. To top it off, our waitress Chara was the sweetest, helping us translate the daily menu, checking regularly on us, etc. It was a shame we didn’t have cash as we were unable to add a tip via credit card. A big lesson we learned and started carrying cash with us. Will happily come again during my next visit.
This popular sandwich joint has drawn foodie crowds and made TV appearances. Their huge focaccia sandwiches are bursting with flavor thanks to fresh local ingredients. It’s small, unpretentious and perfect for a picnic or sitting outside of a historic site.
Pair this visit with a stop at Pompi Tiramisù for the best Tiramisu in Rome. They offer a variety of flavors if you’re keen on venturing out of the traditional.

Signature Rome pasta dishes
- Pico cacio e Pepe – simple pasta dish
- Pasta allá matriciana – for meat eaters
- Carciofi allá Romana – artichoke side and/or starter that is seasonal
- Maritozzo Romano – cream puff with cream dessert item
P.S. Water is ok to drink in Rome so bring your water bottle and indulge in the freshest water one won’t find in many other major cities. For this reason, restaurants do not offer tap water.
