Amigas Explore Iceland’s Ring Road: The epitome of Iceland encapsulated into a road. This iconic route circles the entire island, divided into North, East, South and West regions, each with its own stunning scenery and attractions to discover. My friend and I took a week-long camper van road trip to travel the South and eastern tip of the famous Ring Road in mid-October before snow storms forced us to alter our plans.
As other travel bloggers suggest, summer allows time to fully circumnavigate Iceland in a vehicle within 7-10 days whereas winter conditions extend this to 2 weeks for safety. (Grab our handy 9-day itinerary at the bottom of this article.) For us, being unable to continue along the Ring Road, resulted in altering our plans to explore the renowned Golden Circle.
Nonetheless, our van trip along part of the Ring Road was the highlight of witnessing Iceland’s diverse landscape firsthand with a fellow wanderlusting amiga.

Ways To Get Around Iceland

| Camper van | Cruising Iceland in a camper van is the ULTIMATE road trip. Ours gave us the flexibility to chase sunsets and detour down country trails on a whim, immersing us in Iceland’s remote landscapes. Whether basic or splurging for amenities, rent A Camper Van For The Ring Road with Viator. |
| Tour | If you are more of a driving Mrs. Daisy type of traveler but still want to experience the beauty that the Ring Road has to offer then this 8-Days Guided Iceland Circle Tour from Reykjavík is the perfect option for your trip. |
| Fly | Check out cheap flights to Iceland using Skyscanner – your most trustworthy travel companion. |
| Car Rental | Depending on the number in your group, what else you plan to see and if you opt not to travel with a camper van, renting a car will be the cheaper option. Book your car rental. |
Amigas Ring Road Travel Tips

| Money Accepted: | Credit cards are accepted in most places but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have cash in hand as the Ring Road will feel at times very remote. | ||
| Safety In Iceland: | This Latina chica and her adventure-loving amiga felt completely safely navigating Iceland’s rugged landscapes and remote camping spots by camper van. | ||
| Friendly To Tourists/Latinas: | The locals we ran into, mostly people working in tourism or travelers like us, seemed pretty friendly. But we didn’t get to chat with too many Icelanders. | ||
| Length Of Stay: | To explore Iceland’s Ring Road, I would recommend 1 week in the summer and 2 weeks in the winter. | ||
| Additional Tips: | The language spoken in Iceland is Icelandic and while there is no secondary language, most Icelandic do speak English. This comes in handy when navigating the country without knowing Icelandic. While I do love traveling solo, this is a country I highly recommend visiting with a +1, especially the more remote-feeling Ring Road. Hoping to catch the iconic Northern Lights? Leverage the Aurora Forecast map and download the ‘My Aurora Forecast & Alerts’ app which provides up to date readings on the best time, location and cloud coverage. To capture the best pictures of the Northern lights using your mobile device download the ‘Northern Lights Photo Taker’ and/or ‘NightCap Pro’ app. |
12 Attractions In Iceland’s Ring Road

1. Small Towns and Fishing Villages
Make as many stops as possible to see whatever catches your eye. I am certain with the ever-changing landscape in the Ring Road you will be in awe and find your own must sees.
2. Hverageroi
A town and municipality in the south of Iceland built above a hot-spring field.
3. Seljalandsfoss
Breathtaking waterfall that you can walk around as there is a large cave behind it.
4. Bra Fence in Brekkukot
One of the oldest streets in the city is today, one of the hippest and colorful and perfect for shopping. Take a break here and enjoy a coffee from the many cafes that can be found in this neighborhood.
5. Skogafoss Waterfall
One of the biggest waterfalls in the country.
6. Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Beautiful beach near Vik with basalt columns and powerful waves described by some as dangerous as they sneak up on people without notice.
7. Vik
Quaint little village along the Ring Road. A great place to rest, stock up on items and fill your camper van or rental car with petrol.
8. Solheimajokull Glacier
Glacier in southern Iceland between the Katla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes. Definitely on the list of places to visit. Glacier hikes are offered here and if you have the time and budget, I would say consider but not a must.
9. Scenic Green Lava Walk
Just one of the many little places we had to pull over to see.
10. Jokulsarlon Glacier
A must visit and probably one of my top highlights during the trip. This is a breathtakingly blue glacial lagoon that is dotted with icebergs – a one of a kind view!
11. Fjadrargljufur Canyon
Stunning serpent like canyon.
12. Diamond Beach
This black sand beach sits just across the Jokulsarlon Glacier and has scattered chunks of translucent ice that flows from the glacier lagoon.
Must Do Experiences In Iceland’s Ring Road

Glacier Hike
My friend and I were glad we took a break from the camper van to have this once-in-a-lifetime icy adventure with this Small Group Glacier Experience from Solheimajokull Glacier. We trekked across the icy tongue of Sólheimajökull glacier on this guided hike. Strap on crampons and walk across crevasses and ridges, marveling at the frozen wonderland that only Iceland can bring.

Blue Lagoon
While entrance tickets may seem high, this is certainly a must during the trip. General ticket includes a beverage, towel and mud mask. Be sure to purchase in advance online to avoid queues.
TIP: Beat the crowd by going right when they open at 8:00 AM. While this may be early, it will certainly be worthwhile as we learned. Picture this; less crowds which translates to being able to enjoy the lagoon and take all the insta worthy pictures and the ability to truly enjoy the facilities which aside from the lagoon include a sauna, steam room and relaxation lounge.
