In planning my dad’s first European trip, his input was essential. Like many, he imagined European destinations as just a hop away from each other compared to the vastness of the United States. The reality is, you can’t cover it all. Italy alone is vast, with endless cities to explore. When my dad suggested Assisi, “Assisi Bound: Rail Journey From Rome” felt like striking gold. His suggestion was rooted in the city’s religious significance and despite what felt for me like a long journey to see a church turned into an unexpected highlight of our father-daughter trip.

Even for non-believers, I recommend adding a day trip to Assisi from Rome. It offers a glimpse into a different side of Italy – serene, unhurried, and utterly charming. Though the three-hour train ride each way may seem long, it’s a chance to unwind, immerse yourself in a book, or catch up with the real world.

Latina Travel Blogger Assisi Takeaways

Assisi Bound: Rail Journey From Rome
  • My father and I were pleasantly surprised to find a strong Latino presence in Assisi. Watching my dad strike up conversations in Spanish, sharing travel stories, filled me with joy. It reminded me of the connections I cherish when traveling – meeting people from all corners of the globe.
  • Seeing tourists, who were already retired, effortlessly enjoying their travels, had my dad realizing it was a realistic possibility for him too. After all, my own passion for travel was inherited from him.
  • Assisi charmed us both with its quaint streets and laid-back vibe. Thanks to my dad’s suggestion, we savored a day living the dolce vita in this picturesque Italian town.

Rome To Assisi Train Journey

To travel from Rome to Assisi by train:

1. Head to Rome’s Termini Station.

2. Look for trains heading to Assisi. Most likely, you’ll need to transfer at Foligno. The direct journey is a little over 2 hours or close to 3 if you transfer when you factor in wait times.

3. Buy your ticket either online or at the station. I recommend online to see the full timetable and save time in the station, which I personally find to be a bit overwhelming especially for new visitors.

4. Board the train and enjoy the scenic journey to Assisi or catch up on some ZZZ’s like my dad did.

Book your train tickets like we did using Omni.

Rome To Assisi Via Car

If you’d prefer to not be restrained by train times, I would advise on renting a car.

This was something my dad and I initially explored and discovered there are many providers throughout Rome, which offer day rates making it easy to visit Assisi on your own.

Ultimately, we opted for a train journey as my dad decided on a more laid-back experience.

Check car rental providers and rates.
