Iceland Roadways: Discover & Drive through this wanderlust that is Iceland. Embarking on a road trip through Iceland was an unparalleled journey, where every hour traveled by car revealed an ever-changing landscape in this compact yet diverse island nation.

The experience was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving Ronnie, my adventurous travel companion, and me constantly awestruck. Our ability to “articulate” the wonders we encountered would surely have made our grammar teachers proud, traveling through Iceland’s stunning terrain, we found ourselves repeatedly searching for alternative words to describe the beauty before us, we felt we had to use an array of terms like “stunning,” “breathtaking,” “beautiful,” or “speechless” because repeating these for the different landscapes didn’t feel right.

Our journey wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was a testament to the importance of preparation and having the right resources at hand, which I want to share below with you. Every moment of our adventure was enriched and every memory cherished.

How To Discover & Drive Around Iceland

Iceland Roadways: Discover & Drive

Camper Van

By far the best and most cost-efficient way to travel Iceland is using a camper van since you travel, cook and sleep using the van and it provides for an adventure in itself while doing this.

There are many camper van companies in Iceland so certainly do your research, read reviews and shop around on prices and van styles. We chose a basic camper van and while it did the job, we both agreed that if a male was traveling in the basic camper van style, they would certainly be quite snug. Instead I recommend

Golden Circle – Rent This 4-Day Golden Circle Camper Van with Viator

Camper Van Tips

  • Familiarize yourself with all the information provided by the camper van company and don’t hesitate to ask plenty of questions regarding the proper usage of the van.
  • Practice tasks such as starting the grill stove, adjusting the heat, and managing lighting in front of a staff member to ensure you’re doing everything correctly. This proactive approach could have prevented mishaps like our battery dying and losing heat due to accidentally covering the air vent for the heater.
  • When traveling in a camper van during winter, keep the water container full, prioritizing water for cooking and drinking. Utilize campsite sinks for dish washing to minimize water usage. In winter, hoses for refilling containers may freeze, so be prepared for potential delays. Plan B, bottled water is readily available at gas stations if needed.

Car Rental

If you prefer standard accommodation options like hotels and consider factors such as group size and planned sights, renting a car instead of traveling with a camper van may be the more cost-effective option.

Book your car rental.

Guided Tour

If you prefer a guide to handle the details and drive, consider these tours that explore Iceland’s Ring Road and Golden Circle

Experience the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Iceland while enjoying the comfort of being driven instead of navigating the camper van yourself.

Ways To Be A Road Warrior In Iceland

Driving in Iceland, as I mention is the best way to see the country. Coach bus tours can only help so much and most tours begin in Reykjavik meaning you truly are limited on what you can see or do in Iceland if you stay in the city the whole time during your trip.

Ensure you practice caution while driving by following the below tips for a truly enjoyable journey.

Winter Driving In Iceland

If traveling during the winter months, ensure you check road conditions on Vedur for up to date reports on snowstorms, blizzards etc. Additionally, take any advisory warnings seriously. Remember that with a small population in Iceland this translates to less hands-on assistance to clear roads or provide roadside assistance as quickly as we may be used to. This is especially true, once you are outside of Reykjavik.

Iceland Road Signs & Maps

Be sure to familiarize yourself with wind maps and what road signs mean. Planning your driving based on wind maps is very useful since driving in anything above 30% mph means you will have to drive quite slowly to ensure your car does not tip over.

(See image of truck from pictures for the Ring Road above.) If you do find yourself driving with high winds know that it is doable but one must travel very slow and cautious.

Iceland Good To Know

Money Accepted: While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s wise to carry cash too, especially since certain stretches of the Ring Road can feel quite isolated.
Safety In Iceland:This adventurous Latina and her thrill-seeking friend felt entirely safe while exploring Iceland’s Golden Loop in a camper van.
Language:In Iceland, the primary language spoken is Icelandic, with English being spoken my many locals which makes it optional to brush up on your language skills before your visit.
Solo Trip:While solo travel has its allure, I strongly recommend experiencing this country with a companion.
