As a Latina foodie, I was excited to dive into 3 days of food In Riga with hearty and unique Latvian fare and craft my own culinary food tour during this visit. Why? Well, centuries of foreign influence in Riga have shaped the country and cities culinary tradition – from Germans in the Middle Ages to Soviet day. This has resulted in some yummy comfort foods like potato-filled dumplings, rye bread, and cabbage dishes, perfect for even veggie eaters like myself. Best part, these can be found in many of the restaurants I mention in this article.

Despite other countries’ influence, Latvians have made their own dishes over time. Don’t miss delicacies like gray peas with speck or trying the national liquor balsam with infusions of local herbs and flowers in the various bars around the city.

Riga’s exciting food scene certainly left me eager to continue sampling authentic Latvian cuisine and now you can too!

LIDO

Traditional Latvian food in a canteen style restaurant at affordable prices. LIDO Vērmanītis is the largest canteen and my pick if you had to visit one as there are many scattered throughout the city.

KEY TO RIGA

Traditional Latvian food.

ALA PAGRABS

Latvian restaurant to try with reasonable prices and traditional cuisine including vegetarian options and live entertainment. We got lucky to hear an Argentinian singer for a lovely and unexpected Latin night.

BLACK MAGIC BAR

Decorated like a medieval 18th century pharmacy. This quirky bar offers balsam (national liquor) inspired cocktails which you can enjoy by pairing with a wide selection of truffles that are available here.

KOLONADE

Upscale traditional Latvian in the heart of the city with scenic park views

ANNAS DARZS

Cafe surrounding a garden outside of the city

GAUJA BAR

For an authentic taste of Soviet living, this bar’s retro decor gives you 1970’s apartment vibes and glassware that screams communist days.
